Board and Ply

1.  Board / Ply:  Blockboard, Film faced ply, HDF / MDF board

Film Faced Plywood

HDF / MDF board

Blockboard comprises of a core made of softwood strips. These strips may be up to about 25 mm wide.  The strips are placed edge to edge and sandwiched between veneers of hardwood.  The sandwich is then glued under high pressure.
Film Faced Plywood features a surface paper film impregnated with a phenolic resin and applied under heat and pressure.  The plywood is sealed to minimise the ingress of water.  Film faced plywood is available with a smooth glass like finish on both faces or with a mesh pattern imprinted on the face to prevent slippage.
The surfaces are hard wearing, and different weights of film are available to suit the abrasion and wearing performance.
High Density Fibreboard (HDF) / Medium Density Fibreboard (MDF) has a variety of applications including furniture, audio box, flooring, wallboard, and indoor decoration.  Additionally, MDF can be used for concrete mould, heat resistance board, and non-load-bearing partition walls. It is an economical alternative to natural wood.

Types of Glue

E0, E1 and E2

Plywood glue ranges from a scale of E0 to E2.  E0 is considered to be the healthiest or safest glue.  E1 is considered mid-range and E2 is considered high-range.  This scale is used only with glue types that seep formaldehyde.

In addition to the "E" rating of a glue, there is also a type of glue used in plywood manufacturing.  Type 1 glue is used in outdoor applications.  Type 2 glue is used on interior applications that works better when kept out of the elements.  Either of these types can have a rating of E0 if properly made.

Moisture Resistant (MR) glue means the glue is resistant to moisture.  MR is only a kind of property/feature of the glue.  Therefore, if a glue has MR properties, the glue will can be called MR glue.  MR plywood are usually used for home interior application, such as furniture grade plywood/blockboard and so on .

MR glue can also be used for some exterior shuttering plywood / film faced plywood (formwork plywood).  MR plywood can be in cold water for some days without delamination.  However, MR plywood will delaminate in hot-water within a short time.
Water Boiled Proof (WBP) is used for plywood / film faced plywood where the panel can be exposed to weather, water and moisture for a long period (some maybe permanently ) without delamination.  WBP is not the name of a specific glue, it is a kind of property/feature of the glue.  If a glue has WBP property, the glue will can be called WBP glue.

The best WBP (phenolic) glue can be regarded as permanent adhesives.  The water boiled proof period of plywood is dependent on not only the quality of WBP glue, but also the craftsmanship of production.

In practice, WBP glue is used for interior plywood, such as furniture plywood, cabinet plywood, plywood underlayment and so on.
